Mom charged with neglect
« on: July 27, 2009, 08:25:32 AM »
Mom in SC was charged with neglect regarding her 14 year old son who is 555 lbs.

This kind of crap infuriates me. There is no excuse for her letting it get to this point.
NONE.

Yeah, it's true she can't afford the treatment he now needs...

However... she dropped the ball on 14 years of prevention

I saw that a few days ago, some people are not fit to be parents. It's to bad theres no way to tell in advance what kind of parent someone will be.
sometimes I sit and think, other times I just sit

Hey, I'm still in favorite of people having to interview to become parents

But that's too sci-fi

Holy carp.

I understand that it is extremely difficult being a single working mom, but like so many other things this sort of teaching begins at home because you love your child. Perhaps she could have shown him a few easy meals to make that were good for him- most kids find cooking to be pretty interesting and a way of proving responsibility.

Side tangent: I used to work in a couple of grocery stores when I was first out in the work force as a teenager. It was always disheartening to see people provided food stamp cards and the extremely unhealthy things that would be in their carts. Sugary cereals, chips, hardly ever a veggie or fruit to be found.

Here is what the government says are eligible items:

* Foods for the household to eat, such as:
     --    breads and cereals;
     --    fruits and vegetables;
     --    meats, fish and poultry; and
     --    dairy products.

* Seeds and plants which produce food for the household to eat.

Healthy foods are available and an option to everyone.

I'm not trying to blame my mom or anything... but in 1991 my grandma died and my mom kinda just gave up for awhile on everything

We went from eating healthier foods to... "whatever we could find"

Maybe I'm just as guilty of making bad food now for Susan's kids.

This will take a bit of reflection.

Regardless of circumstances, as a parent you have to take care of your kids and make sure they're healthy. If you go through a down period because of whatever, that's understandable, we're all only human after all. But if it gets to the point that your 14-year-old son weighs 555 pounds, that's not just 'circumstances' and 'a tough period' anymore. Then you're just doing it wrong.

Curious, your Avatar and Screen Name is from Velvet Goldmine right? I watched that for Ewan McGregor back in the day when I couldn't get enough of him. Well I saw plenty of him on there  ??? ;) But, yeah that movie was an odd one for me. I liked it, but felt a wee uncomfortable too, lol.

Yep, well, I changed my name back now but the pic and ex-name are indeed both from Velvet Goldmine. I absolutely love that movie, but I can also see how it's not everyone's cup of tea lol3 I'm just a sucker for anything gay/transsexual/transvestite/cross dressing/etcetera, it's a personal interest of mine.

Tru dat.
I'm not a single mom, but Mr.Man has a corporate job that requires travel and is out of town just about every Monday thru Thursday and I work Tues thru Friday, so that puts my kids at home, feeding themselves, every Tues-Wed and Thursday (during the summer) and the things that are easy for them to fix themselves aren't the healthiest of foods (macaroni and cheese, frozen pizzas or TV dinners) and I don't want them attempting to cook full course meals  without me there. But anyway, they aren't obese, but my boy is a thick guy (but daddy is a big ol' boy, too) and my daughter is a rail.  Nonetheless, I am going to pay more attention to leaving them some better options.
