Man with a gun at obama town meeting

This might be an interesting discussion.

Sure the guy was not breaking any laws but what the fuck was he thinking? Carryng a gun and a sign bearing this quote "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants." at a presidential town hall meeting.

sometimes I sit and think, other times I just sit

The article was short and seemed to be missing a conclusion to the situation, no?

It seems to me that regardless of permit allowance, being in the presence of the President of the United States would supersede in rank.  No one but the President's guards should be allowed to strap as far as I'm concerned.  But alas, I am not in charge of such things.

I think he won't be there as I'm sure that although it is state law for that man to be there, there is probably a Federal law that involves a certain radius around the President and Federal law always trumps State law

So yeah... he's there before Obama... but once Obama is there I am sure he won't be... or the gun won't be

yeah the article doesnt give a whole lot of real info, I was talking to a coworker about it today and he immediately jumped to the conclusion that I was disputing his, or anyones right to carry (where allowed) I wasnt disputing the guys right to carry, I was questioning his intelligence.

Just because you can do something and be within the law, doesnt mean you SHOULD do something.  I'm sure the guy is now screaming that his rights have been violated and they most likely have if he was detained or anything, but what would a reasonable person expect to happen when you go to a presidential meeting, strapped and carrying a sign that basically says "sometimes you gotta kill a mother fucker to defend your freedom"

The law is that a "sane" individual can carry... and therefor if his sanity is in question (i.e. carrying a gun at a function the president will be attending) then his right to carry is in question

Sounds like your co-worker is a defensive person.  "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" is one of my unwritten, but frequently spoken life rules. ;)

Very good point.  Add in the ie "and flashing a large sign indicative of his potentially harmful actions".

Man with assault rifle attends Obama protest
Experts fret over ‘chilling’ effect on political discourse following Ariz. event

updated 1 hour, 39 minutes ago
PHOENIX - About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Monday — the latest incident in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president.

Gun-rights advocates say they're exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Phoenix police said the gun-toters at Monday's event, including the man carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle slung over his shoulder, didn't need permits. No crimes were committed, and no one was arrested.

Ok, they weren't breaking any laws.
That doesn't excuse them for being fucking idiots.

The key to the right to bear arms is that the government doesn't know you would use it to defend your rights.
I bet every one of those putz's is on a list now.
